World Boxing Heavy Weight Champion Jack Sharkey (October 26, 1902 – August 17, 1994) was born to Lithuanian immigrants in Binghamton, New York. He got his start boxing while in the Navy, quickly becoming the best boxer on every ship he served.
On June 21, 1932, Jack defeated German boxer Max Schmeling at Madison Square Garden in a title match. Although he held the title for just one year, Jack is remembered to have been the only man who fought both Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis.
He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994 and died a few months later, at the ripe age of 91.
